A barrel cut gives these pants their rounded volume through the thigh and calf before tapering slightly toward the ankle. We used a medium-weight corduroy that holds heat during colder months without feeling stiff. The elastic waistband pulls on easily and stays put with a flat drawstring.

• Curved barrel leg. The leg widens through the knee and curves inward at the hem. This shape keeps the hem off the ground while leaving plenty of room through the seat and thighs as you walk.
• Corduroy ribs. We chose a soft, medium-weight corduroy with distinct vertical ribs. The ridges trap warm air on brisk days and give the solid black cloth a low, matte texture that softens with wear.
• Adjustable waist. An elastic band circles the entire waist, reinforced with a self-fabric drawstring at the front. It sits high on the hips and stretches smoothly without bunching up under heavier sweaters.
• Washing and care. Machine wash cold or wash by hand to keep the ribbed pile soft and even. Lay the trousers flat in the shade to dry rather than tumbling them with heat, and skip the bleach.
