We cut this shirt wide through the body so the fabric hangs straight from the shoulders without clinging. Deep black linen gives the turn-down collar and button placket a clean line. Smocked elastic at the wrists lets you push the sleeves up your forearms and keep them there.

• Cut and collar. A dropped shoulder and a roomy chest give this button-down an easy drape. We gave it a crisp turn-down collar, a single patch pocket on the left breast, and a straight hem that sits below the hip.
• Smocked cuffs. Instead of a traditional button cuff, we gathered the wrist with rows of elastic smocking. The sleeve stays in place when pushed up to the elbow, leaving the volume loose and gathered along the arm.
• Linen weave. The linen blend has a textured weave that lets air move through on warm days. The fabric softens with each wash, holding soft rumples rather than stiff creases, and hangs with substantial weight in solid black.
• Washing and care. Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water or wash by hand. Hang the shirt on a hanger to dry naturally to preserve the shape of the collar and the elasticity in the cuffs. Use steam to remove deep creases.
