We cut these lounge shorts wide in the leg so the cloth clears the thigh and catches the breeze. The smocked waist pulls straight on without hardware. Rose pink checks break up the light linen blend, giving the weave a relaxed, washed look from the first morning.

• Shirred smocked waist. Rows of fine elastic gather the high waistband into soft ridges that hold without pinching. The band sits flat against the lower ribs and expands easily when you sit.
