We cut these summer shorts with a high rise and wide leg openings that stay clear of the thigh. The lightweight linen blend drapes soft rather than stiff, and the yarn-dyed red and white check gives the weave visual depth. Pull them on and let the smocking hold the waist.

• Smocked elastic waistband. A tall band of shirred elastic sits flat against the high waist without digging. It pulls on easily, stretches across the hips, and recovers its shape after a full day of wear.
• Loose thigh cut. We gave the legs generous room so fabric never clings when the weather turns hot. The hem falls loose around the lower thigh, leaving space for movement when walking or sitting.
• Deep side pockets. Two inset side pockets sit along the hip seams. We anchored them deep enough to hold a phone or keys without pulling the waist down or distorting the front drape.
• Cold water wash. Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle to keep the red check bright and the fibres soft. Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry to avoid hard wrinkles.
