We cut these trousers with a curved horseshoe leg that bows out through the thigh and narrows toward the shoe. The solid corduroy holds its own structure and traps warmth through cold months. A high elastic waist gathers under a heavy cotton rope cord.

• Barrel leg line. The leg curves outward along the side seam before pulling back in at the hem. That horseshoe shape keeps the fabric off your knees while you walk, giving the wale room to move without pooling underfoot.
• Ribbed corduroy cloth. We chose a medium-weight corduroy with a defined vertical rib. The ridges trap still air for winter warmth, and the dark coffee dye takes deeply into the cotton pile, softening with wash and wear.
• Drawstring high waist. The high-rise casing holds a wide band of elastic that sits flat across your back. We threaded a thick cotton rope through the front so you can knot the waistband tight over winter knitwear.
• Cargo patch pockets. Deep utility patch pockets sit flat on the front thighs rather than tucked into the side seams. They give you a place to rest cold hands without breaking the rounded curve of the outer leg.
