We shaped these cold-weather trousers with a distinct horseshoe leg that bows out through the thigh and narrows toward the cuff. The ribbed corduroy holds body and traps warmth without stiffening. An elasticated high rise anchors the loose cut, finished with a heavy cord tie and flat cargo pockets.

• Barrel leg shape. The outer seams arc outward around the knee and draw back in at the hem. This gives you room to step while keeping the cuffs clear of your boots.
• Ribbed corduroy cloth. We selected a midweight corduroy with a pronounced wale that stays soft against the skin. The ridged weave traps air for cool mornings and softens with repeated washes.
• Elastic waist and cord. An elasticated band sits high on the waist so the seat stays put when you sit. We threaded it with a thick cotton rope drawstring to adjust the fit.
• Front patch pockets. Large cargo-style utility pockets sit flat on the front thighs without adding bulk to the hips. They run deep enough to hold a phone securely.
