We cut these sweatpants from a midweight cotton-blend fleece in neutral khaki. The volume swells through the knee and tucks back toward the ankle, while stitched lace tape runs the length of the outer leg. An elastic waist with an adjustable drawstring anchors the loose cut.

• Barrel leg shape. We gave the legs an arched curve that bows out past the thigh and narrows at the cropped hem. The excess cloth stacks loosely instead of pooling underfoot, giving the heavyweight knit room to fold.
• Lace side inserts. A flat strip of open lace runs down the outer seam from hip to cuff. It breaks up the solid khaki fleece and sits flush against the stitch line so the leg keeps its curved outline.
• Drawstring waistband. The wide waistband holds a encased elastic band paired with an adjustable fabric tie. It sits flat across the middle and keeps the seat from pulling downward when the pockets carry weight.
• Washing and care. Wash cold on a gentle cycle to protect the open lace trim and tumble dry on low heat. The cotton-blend fleece softens after laundering and holds its shape without heavy pressing.
