We cut these sweatpants wide through the thigh and bowed out along the calf to make a true barrel shape. The cotton blend fabric carries enough weight to hold that curve without stiffening up. A gathered drawstring waistband sits high and stays put when you sit.

• Bowed barrel leg. The outer seam curves wide past the knee before tapering inward toward the ankle. This gives the leg room to move without dragging fabric under your heels.
• Elastic drawstring waist. We built the waistband with wide interior elastic and an exterior drawcord. You can knot it where you want, and the wide band keeps the fabric from digging into your waist.
• Slanted ankle cuff. Instead of a gathered elastic hem, we finished the leg with a clean slanted cuff. It breaks neatly over low shoes and keeps the barrel outline tidy at the bottom.
• Cotton blend fleece. The knit is brushed soft on the inside and smooth on the outside. It holds warmth for cool mornings, washes on a gentle cold cycle, and dries flat to keep its shape.
