We cut these trousers with an arched barrel leg that bows out through the calf and settles above the shoe. The lightweight linen blend uses alternating panels of black stripe patchwork, pieced together for a broken vertical grain. An elastic waist with a flat tie cord keeps the rise easy.

• Barrel leg shape. The outer seam curves wide past the knee and pulls back slightly at the cropped hem. That curve keeps the fabric off your shins while the open linen weave vents heat during warm walks.
• Striped patchwork panels. We pieced the legs from contrasting panels of black stripes running at slight angles to each other. The varied vertical lines break up the volume across the front and back of each leg.
• Waistband and pockets. A gathered elastic band sits comfortably across the hips with an adjustable drawcord sewn in to set the rise where you want it. Two deep side pockets sit flat along the hip seams.
• Wash and line dry. Wash on a gentle cycle in cool or lukewarm water, or wash by hand. Do not bleach. Hang the pants on a line to dry and let the linen blend regain its natural drape.
