A yellow and white gingham woven into light linen. We built these with a high rise and a curved barrel leg that balloons through the calf before tapering back toward the ankle. The elastic waist stays flat and adjusts with a self-fabric drawstring.

• Barrel leg cut. The curve starts below the hip, widens through the shin, and narrows at the hem. It keeps the fabric off your shins while walking and lets the linen catch the breeze without dragging along the ground.
• Drawstring waistband. We gathered the top over wide elastic that holds its position on the natural waist. You can knot the matching front cord tight or let it hang loose when you want less tension.
• Side seam pockets. Two deep pockets sit along the side seams. We anchored them to lie flat against the hip when empty, but they hold a phone or a set of keys without pulling the waist down.
• Linen care. Wash this linen by hand or on a gentle machine cycle in lukewarm water. Hang the pants up to dry out of direct heat to keep the yellow grid crisp and the weave soft.
