We cut these from a soft ribbed corduroy that holds warmth in cool weather. The high rise sits flat with front pleats that open into a loose harem taper, finished with turned-up plaid cuffs at the hem. Dark coffee brings out the rich texture of the wales.

• Front pleats and rise. A high rise anchors the waist while front pleats give the hips and seat extra room. The fabric falls away from the middle without pulling or clinging when you sit.
• Tapered harem leg. Volume sits through the thigh and narrows down through the calf. The cut leaves plenty of space to move while keeping excess fabric clear of your shoes.
• Plaid rolled cuffs. The hem turns up to show a neat contrast plaid lining. It adds weight to the bottom of each leg so the corduroy hangs straight instead of bunching.
• Corduroy care. Machine wash cold with like colors to protect the nap and the deep brown shade. Hang dry or tumble dry low, and use a low iron if you want to press the pleats.
