We cut these loose trousers from textured corduroy in milky white and set woven plaid panels along the outer leg. The barrel shape bows out through the calf before tapering toward the ankle. An elastic waistband with a flat drawstring keeps the top easy.

• Corduroy and plaid panels. We pieced ribbed corduroy alongside checkered panels down the outer leg. The corduroy wales trap warmth while the inset cloth adds structure to the outer seam.
• Barrel leg shape. The leg curves out from the thigh, widens through the knee, and pulls back in above the shoe. That bowed line lets the heavy fabric hold its shape off your legs.
• Drawstring elastic waistband. A gathered elastic band circles the waist with an adjustable drawcord threaded through the front. It pulls on without hardware and rests securely without binding.
• Cold water wash. Wash inside out on a gentle cold cycle to protect the corduroy ribs and the patchwork seams. Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry to keep the cut square.
