We cut these trousers from ribbed corduroy in dark coffee, then set plaid panels down the outer legs. The barrel shape bows out through the thigh and tapers back at the ankle. A wide elastic waistband with a flat drawstring keeps the rise sitting where you pull it.

• Barrel leg shape. The legs arc outward from the hip and curve back inward above the shoe. That bowed line leaves plenty of room through the knee while keeping the hem neat and off the floor.
• Plaid patchwork panels. Woven plaid inserts run down the outer seams to break up the solid corduroy. The seams are stitched flat so the panels sit flush against the heavy ribbed base fabric.
• Drawstring waistband. We gathered the top over a wide band of elastic and threaded it with an adjustable cord. You can wear the rise high on the waist or drop it lower on the hips.
• Washing and care. Wash cold on a gentle cycle to preserve the nap of the corduroy and keep the check panels flat. Tumble dry on low heat and remove promptly to avoid hard creases.
