We cut these loose bloomers from a midweight corduroy that holds heat when the weather cools down. The waist pulls on with elastic and ties down with a drawstring. Down the leg, the volume bellies out through the calf before gathering back into ruffled ankle cuffs.

• Gathered lantern leg. The cut drops wide through the thigh and balloons around the lower leg. Gathered cuffs pull the fullness back in at the ankle, leaving a small ruffle at the hem that sits over boots without dragging.
• Elastic drawstring waist. We built the waistband with a broad band of elastic and an exterior drawcord. It sits flat across the middle, stretches as you sit, and ties tight when you load the side pockets.
• Midweight corduroy ribs. The ridged corduroy weave has enough body to maintain the lantern shape while softening with wear. In caramel, the fine wales catch the light across the pleats and folds of the leg.
• Care and washing. Wash cold on a gentle cycle or by hand to protect the corduroy nap. Reshape the cuffs and dry flat in the shade. Skip the bleach to keep the caramel tone rich.
