We cut these shorts wide through the leg so air moves through on hot days. The linen blend softens after washing and wrinkles naturally with wear. We gave them a gathered elastic waist, a flat braided tie, and deep side pockets that sit flat along the hip seam.

• Striped linen weave. Vertical stripes in muted beanpaste red and soft white run the length of the shorts. The open linen weave lets heat vent quickly, while the blended yarn keeps the fabric from feeling stiff against bare legs.
• Elastic waist and tie. We built the waistband with a wide encased elastic band that stays flat against the skin without twisting. An exterior drawstring lets you adjust the tension depending on where you prefer the rise to sit.
• Roomy leg cut. The legs fall straight from the hip with extra ease around the thigh so the fabric never clings when you sit. A clean hem gives the leg opening enough weight to hang straight instead of riding up.
• Side seam pockets. We set slash pockets into the side seams, deep enough to hold a phone or keys without pulling the waist down. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle and line dry in the shade to preserve the stripe.
