A wide leg needs room to fall straight from the hip. We cut these palazzo pants in an open linen weave with an elastic smocked band and a working drawstring to anchor the waist. The rust red tone is dyed into the yarn before cutting, so the colour stays grounded through repeated washes.

• Smocked waistband. We gather the top with rows of fine elastic thread across a broad band. The cotton drawcord knots at the front to adjust the grip, so the waistband sits flat without pinching when you sit down.
• Ruffled side pockets. Two deep slant pockets sit along the side seams for keys or a pocketknife. We added a soft ruffle trim along each opening, stitched flat into the seam line to keep the pocket mouth from gaping outward.
• Palazzo leg cut. The leg drops wide from the high hip down to a wide open hem. The linen weave moves air around the calves, while the weight of the lower hem keeps the cloth from tangling as you walk.
• Wash and care. Linen softens as it ages. Wash on a gentle cycle or by hand in cool water, skip the machine dryer, and line dry in the shade. A warm steam iron takes out heavy packing folds while keeping the natural weave intact.
