We built these cold-weather pants around a curved barrel leg that bows out at the thigh and tapers back toward the ankle. The ribbed corduroy holds its ridge through the wash, while pieced plaid panels break up the dark coffee tone. An elastic band with a front button sits flat without binding.

• Curved barrel leg. The leg cuts wide through the thigh and curves inward before the hem. This shape keeps the hem off the ground and leaves plenty of space around the knee for easy movement through the day.
• Plaid patchwork panels. We pieced contrast plaid panels directly into the dark coffee corduroy. The seams sit flat against the body, giving the trouser texture and weight without adding bulk inside the leg.
• Elastic button waist. An elastic waistband works alongside a front button fastening to hold the waist in place without pinching. It sits comfortably at the natural waist and pulls on easily.
• Corduroy fabric and care. The ribbed corduroy resists wrinkles and holds warmth in cool weather. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, then hang or lay flat to dry to preserve the soft pile of the ridges.
