A wide gingham short with volume gathered through the leg and hem. We cut this pair from a light cotton blend in a purple and orange check, sitting on a flexible waistband that adjusts with a flat cord. Two side pockets keep the lines clean.

• Balloon leg volume. The leg curves outward from the hip and pulls back in at the hem. Air moves through the wide cut, while the gathering keeps the hem from catching while you walk.
• Drawstring elastic waist. We built the waistband with a wide elastic core and threaded a matching drawcord through the front. It sits flat against the skin without digging when you sit down.
• Purple orange check. The yarn-dyed gingham weaves purple and soft orange into a clean checkered grid. The cotton-blend fabric feels light, softens up with wear, and holds its boxy balloon shape.
